Jeff Cohn Cellars 2019 Syrah, "Domaine des Chirats" Rockpile Vineyard, Rockpile
Tasting Notes:
A dense purple color, with aromatics that remind me of a well-seasoned flank steak cooked on an extremely hot white-coal grill and served rare with amazing grill marks. On the palate the wine is focused on savory notes with loads black and red fruits, freshly ground white pepper, pan fried thick cut bacon, and very floral. As rich and powerful as this wine is, it continues to stay light on its feet.
Awards/Notable Reviews:
95 pts Audrey Frick for Jeb Dunnuck — The 2019 Syrah Domaine des Chirats comes from the Rockpile Vineyard and has very soft floral aromas of lavender, baked earth, and sweet smoke. The palate is ripe and inviting, with boysenberry and turned earth, and the wine displays a building structure on the finish that would welcome another year or two in bottle before drinking. Drink 2023-2032.
94 pts Wine Spectator — Vibrant and racy, with expressive black raspberry, garrigue and smoked meat accents that build richness and structure toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2035.

Winemaker Notes:
This is the oldest block of Syrah at Rockpile Vineyard. The original budwood came directly from Hermitage and was planted soon after.
After making this Syrah for many years and using it in the ‘Haley’ bottling. I decided to try a new project. This time, I wanted to work with another of my winemaking heroes, Yves Cuilleron of Côte-Rôtie. Yves and I wanted to take this wine in a different direction than what I had been making.
